Spanish Socialist Leader Declares Airspace Off-Limits to US Planes in Iran War

Spanish soclialist leader Pedro Sanchez

In early March, Spain broke with European powers and barred American use of bases in the escalating Middle Eastern conflict.

The decision marks a sharp divergence from other major European powers that have signaled willingness to back what they describe as “proportionate defensive action.”

Flight tracking data from FlightRadar24 showed that at least 15 American aircraft departed the Rota naval base and Morón air base in southern Spain following the weekend attacks. Several of those aircraft were identified as KC-135 “Stratotanker” aerial refueling planes.

At least seven of the aircraft were tracked landing at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. Others were seen heading toward France, though some flight paths were not publicly visible.

On Monday Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced that Spain has closed its airspace to U.S. planes involved in the Iran war.

Margarita added this via the AP, “This was made perfectly clear to the American military and forces from the very beginning. Therefore, neither the bases are authorized, nor, of course, is the use of Spanish airspace authorized for any actions related to the war in Iran,” Robles told reporters.

The last time Spain refused to allow the US from using air bases in their country for the War in Iran, President Trump threatened to cut off all trade with Spain.
