Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) may finally allow a vote on the SAVE America Act after all, but America should not get its hopes up on anything getting to President Trump’s desk.

As TGP readers know, Thune previously quashed an effort to use ‘the talking filibuster’ to pass the SAVE Act, citing opposition from at least four Republicans and doubts regarding the ability to outlast Democrats.

He also dismissed the growing grassroots movement demanding passage of the SAVE America Act as nothing more than a manufactured effort by a so-called “paid influencer ecosystem.”

On Tuesday afternoon, Thune performed a U-turn of sorts, telling reporters that there would be a vote, giving those advocating for the SAVE Act a chance to pass it.

But then he made clear he thought the whole issue was a waste of time since Democrats would probably end up defeating the measure anyway.

WATCH:

THUNE: That debate will happen. But as I said, I can guarantee the debate. I can guarantee a vote. I just can’t guarantee an outcome.

I think there are a lot of optimistic views about what Democrats may or may not do.

We all know, because we deal with them every day, that the Democrats are not all of a sudden going to decide that this is something they want to be for.

I think you have a lot of optimists out there, and I appreciate that, and a lot of passion and energy behind getting an outcome here. But getting an outcome would require Democrat votes.

And, you know, we’ll give them a chance. Like I said, they’ll have that opportunity to vote one way or the other on this.

But I would be very, very surprised.

Thune also said that he would like the Senate to vote on Trump’s additional demands to the SAVE Act, which include: no child transgender mutilations and no universal mail-in ballots.

Again, he did not signal any urgency in getting this done.

The SAVE Act is an absolutely critical measure that requires every American to show ID to cast a ballot. It also requires proof of citizenship BEFORE registering to vote.

Democrats are in meltdown mode because, should the measure pass, they will find stealing elections far more challenging.
