Trump Says Russia and Ukraine Peace Talks Entering ‘Final Stages’ (VIDEO)

President Trump said on Sunday, while meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, that the United States is now in the “final stages” of negotiations aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The talks come amid an intensified diplomatic push by Trump to broker a peace agreement.

Just two hours before sitting down with Zelensky, Trump held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss Washington’s proposed framework for a settlement.

Zelensky told Axios on Friday that he hoped Sunday’s meeting would produce an agreed framework for ending the conflict.

He said he would be willing to submit the plan to a national referendum if Russia agrees to a ceasefire lasting at least 60 days.

While Zelensky acknowledged progress in the talks, the U.S. proposal would require Ukraine to make significant territorial concessions in the Donbas region.

Zelensky said he is seeking to improve those terms and would need public approval if a “strong” territorial position cannot be secured.

Putin’s foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, said the Trump-Putin call, which lasted 75 minutes, was initiated by Trump and conducted in a “friendly tone.”

Ushakov claimed both leaders believe Ukraine “needs to make a decision about Donbas without delay.”

Trump later told reporters that both Zelensky and Putin want a peace deal, adding that any agreement would include security guarantees, though he offered no further details.

He said he plans to speak with European leaders during the meeting and to call Putin again afterward.
