Texas DPS Seizes $3.4 Million Worth of Meth During Traffic Stop on Commercial Vehicle
Texas DPS seized $3.4 million worth of meth this week during a traffic stop in Live Oak County. The meth weighed just under 2,000 pounds. The meth was destined for the city of Dallas and was being transported in a commercial vehicle. Operation Lone Star‘s ongoing mission has helped make Texas a safer place.
This past Wednesday, a DPS trooper pulled over a tractor-trailer for a traffic infraction. The trooper became suspicious of potential criminal activity. Live Oak Sheriff was contacted to help conduct a search of the vehicle. The K9 unit was used to identify the trailer as a positive find.
The DPS trooper, along with the agency’s Criminal Investigations Division, found and seized 479 bundles of meth wrapped in black tape. The drugs were hidden in a fake floor compartment in the trailer.
The 32-year-old driver, Diego Mendez from Alton, Texas, was taken into custody. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance. It is considered a first-degree felony because it exceeded 400 grams.
Mendez is being held at the Live Oak County Jail, and the investigation is ongoing.

WESLACO – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) seized nearly 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine during an Operation Lone Star traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle in Live Oak Co. this week. The drugs were being transported to Dallas.
On Wednesday, March 4, 2026, just after 3:30 p.m., a DPS Trooper stopped a blue 2020 Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer for a traffic violation on US 281 near George West. During the stop, the Trooper noticed signs of possible criminal activity, prompting further investigation. A Live Oak Co. Sheriff’s Office K-9 was called in to assist and positively alerted to the trailer, which led the Trooper and Special Agents with DPS’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) to locate and seize 479 black tape-wrapped bundles of methamphetamine hidden in a false floor compartment beneath the trailer. The bundles weighed a total of 1,980 pounds and had an estimated street value of $3.4 million.
In addition to seizing drugs and arresting drug smugglers, Texas DPS also has a great track record of apprehending illegal aliens.
On Friday, Texas DPS brush team along with the Border Patrol, captured five illegal aliens in the Rio Grande Valley. Three of those were special interest illegals from Vietnam. The human smuggler guide Gaiell Ramirez, was only 17 years old, was also an illegal alien from Mexico. He was arrested and charged with human smuggling and evading arrest.
The illegals that were being smuggled were wearing colored wrist bands. The cartels use that as a way of tracking payment of those that they smuggle into the US.
