A man identified as an illegal migrant from Mali, who was subject to a deportation order, is suspected of carrying out a mass stabbing on the Paris metro.

French authorities arrested a 25-year-old Malian national on Friday evening after three women were stabbed on Line 3 of the Paris metro between approximately 4:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. local time.

The attacks occurred across multiple stations before the suspect was taken into custody.

While the victims’ injuries were described as superficial and are not believed to be life-threatening, reports indicate the suspect should not have been in France at all.

According to French media, he had previously been ordered to leave the country but remained at large months later.

Citing sources within the Paris prosecutor’s office, Le Figaro reported that the suspect had been imprisoned last year for aggravated theft and sexual assault.

The suspected stabber has also been deemed “mentally unstable” by authorities and medical experts.

He was released from custody in July and subsequently issued with an OQTF, an “Obligation de Quitter le Territoire Français,” ordering him to leave French territory.

However, he was never deported as a result of France’s complicated legal system, where activist lawyers and judges typically protect migrants from removal.

The probe is being handled by the Regional Transport Security Service (SRT), which has stated that terrorism is not currently being considered as a motive. Investigators have described the suspect as “mentally unstable.”

The incident is the latest in a growing list of violent crimes in France involving migrants who were subject to OQTF deportation orders but remained in the country regardless.

Just last month, a 33-year-old mother in the town of La Rochelle was left clinging to life after being repeatedly stabbed in her apartment building by a migrant from the Ivory Coast.
