WATCH: US Attorney Announces Rob Reiner’s Son Charged with 2 Counts of First Degree Murder – Faces Life in Prison or Potential Death Penalty
Nick Reiner, son of Hollywood actor/director Rob Reiner and Michelle Reiner, faces charges of two counts of first-degree murder, Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced on Tuesday.
The charges were filed this afternoon.
Reiner was arrested for murdering his parents on Monday after they were both found dead in their home with knife wounds on Sunday.
Now, District Attorney Hochman says the state of California will potentially seek the death penalty against Reiner, but “No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty.”
It would appear that the “special circumstance of multiple murders,” Hochman outlined, and the “special allegation,” involving a deadly weapon, may play a role in determining the death penalty.
Today, I’m here to announce that our office will be filing charges against Nick Reiner, who is accused of killing his parents, actor, director Rob Reiner and photographer, producer Michelle Singer Reiner. These charges will be two counts of first degree murder, with a special circumstance of multiple murders.
He also fesses a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon— that being a knife. These charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty.
However, in California, the death penalty remains tricky and would not be enforced as Governor Gavin Newsom imposed a moratorium in 2019, halting executions. In 2022, Newsom also signed the Racial Justice Act for All, which gives nonwhite inmates a pathway to relief from death sentences.
California’s last execution was nearly 20 years ago in 2006.
Per CNN, “No decision has been made on whether or not prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Nick Reiner, Hochman said. He mentioned that the District Attorney’s Office will take the ‘thoughts and desires of the family into consideration’ when making that decision.”
As The Gateway Pundit reported, the Hollywood director and his wife, Michelle, were found dead in their home with knife wounds on Sunday, and Nick Reiner was later arrested.
Reiner was open about his son Nick’s drug addiction and made a movie about the family’s experience with his drug problem.
