HUH? Mother of Karoline Leavitt’s Nephew Taken into ICE Custody

A woman taken into ICE custody earlier this month has been discovered to have a familial connection with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. 

Bruna Ferreira, who is currently in custody at a Louisiana ICE facility after being arrested in Revere, Massachusetts, shares an 11-year-old child with Leavitt’s brother, Michael.

It appears Ferreira is estranged from the family after the couple reportedly separated roughly ten years ago.

The young boy lives full-time with Michael Leavitt in New Hampshire, according to an administration official.

Per Boston’s WBUR:

Bruna Ferreira, a Boston-area resident who migrated with her family to the U.S. from Brazil as a child, according to her sister and immigration authorities, is now in custody at an ICE facility in Louisiana.

Michael Leavitt, the press secretary’s brother, had a relationship with Ferreira, and the two have a son.

A Trump administration official confirmed the connection between Ferreira, Michael Leavitt and his sister Karoline Leavitt — the 28-year-old New Hampshire native who rose from relative obscurity to occupy one of the most prominent positions in the White House. The official said the child’s parents have not spoken in years, and that the child has lived full-time in New Hampshire with Michael Leavitt since his birth.

An attorney representing Ferreira claimed that the mother and father “both share custody of their child,” but this has not been confirmed.

Additionally, Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said that Ferreira had a “previous arrest for battery” after entering the country on a tourist visa, which expired in 1999. Per NBC, she appears to have been eligible to stay under Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, despite being in the country illegally.

However, McLaughlin said, DACA recipients can still be deported “for a number of reasons, including if they’ve committed a crime.”

Another Homeland Security official described Ferreira as a “criminal illegal alien from Brazil.”

Karoline Leavitt has not commented on the news, but an administration official told WBUR that she “had no involvement whatsoever in this matter.”
