Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez used her five minutes at a November 2025 House Oversight Subcommittee hearing in Washington, D.C., to deliver one of the most dramatic—and misleading—presentations Congress has heard this year.

Ocasio-Cortez claimed that the United States faces “2008-style threats” because of an alleged “AI bubble,” warning that Americans are turning to chatbots for “suicidality” and “AI psychosis.”

Her comments drew national attention not because of their substance, but because they contrast sharply with the measurable economic strength occurring under President Donald Trump.

The hearing, held by the Oversight Subcommittee on Innovation, focused on the safety and transparency of artificial intelligence.

The witness panel included Dr. Brian King, a digital privacy expert whom Ocasio-Cortez repeatedly pressed to endorse her claims.

Throughout her remarks, she insisted that tech companies—from Microsoft to Amazon to Meta—were responsible for a supposed mental-health crisis linked to AI tools.

She also argued that the U.S. economy relies almost entirely on seven technology companies, citing a Wall Street Journal headline published earlier that morning.

But Ocasio-Cortez’s framing ignored what is actually happening in the American economy.

Under President Trump’s current term, economic expansion has been broad, not narrow.

Manufacturing growth is at its highest rate since 2018. Small-business optimism is back to pre-pandemic levels.

Energy prices have stabilized because of Trump’s restored oil and gas permitting program. Inflation has fallen for nine consecutive months.

Wages continue to outpace inflation, particularly for working-class families who suffered the most under the Biden administration. None of these gains were mentioned once in Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks.

Her warnings about an “AI bubble” also ignore the key reality driving investment: companies are rapidly expanding capacity, hiring American workers, and building new training centers in states like Texas, Arizona, Georgia, and Ohio.

Those projects exist because the Trump administration’s regulatory reforms reopened the technology sector after years of stagnation.

Even Dr. King, when questioned, stated only that corporate privacy policies evolve with new products—a routine process—not that artificial intelligence is destabilizing the U.S. financial system.

Ocasio-Cortez concluded her testimony by declaring that Congress must “never entertain a bailout” should the AI sector collapse.

The statement was puzzling.

No such collapse is occurring, and no bailout has ever been proposed. What is happening, instead, is a predictable effort by progressive members of Congress to undercut an industry that thrives under Trump administration policies they oppose.

The hearing revealed a broader truth: while Democrats continue to promote economic panic, President Trump is presiding over the strongest and most diverse economic recovery in over a decade—one built on American innovation, not fear.
