Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist (communist) mayor-elect of New York City, is already walking back his completely insane plan to replace police with social workers in response to certain crimes.

It was never a realistic idea to begin with. It was an effort on his part to appeal to the ‘defund the police’ wing of the Democrat party, of which Mamdani is himself a member.

The truth is that police never really know what kind of dangerous situation they might be walking into, even on the most routine calls.

The New York Post reports:

Zohran Mamdani now says NYPD should respond to domestic violence incidents, backtracking on past controversial statements

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani now says the NYPD should be responsible for responding to domestic violence incidents, backtracking Wednesday on his past controversial comments.

The socialist Queens assemblyman’s about-face came as he appeared publicly for the first time with his newly-announced Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who will stay on in her role in the incoming administration.

“That has not been part of the proposal we have put forward over the course of the campaign,” Mamdani said when asked by a reporter whether his proposed new Department of Community Safety would handle such 911 calls.

“What we did say is it’s untenable for officers to be asked to respond to 200,000 mental health calls that are received every year.”

Mamdani, 34, caught flak during the mayoral campaign over a resurfaced podcast interview from 2020 in which he said that cops shouldn’t respond to domestic violence reports out of fear of “escalation.”

Just a few days ago, the New York Post reported that a similar rime response pilot program is already failing:

The early results of a program dubbed B-HEARD spell trouble for Mamdani’s proposed $1.1 billion Department of Community Safety (DCS), a signature initiative that his newly announced chief of staff and left-hand woman, Elle Bisgaard-Church, helped craft.

B-HEARD launched in 2021 as a pilot program and only operates in some city neighborhoods, but a bleak audit conducted in May by the city comptroller found it was limping — with a whopping 60% of calls deemed ineligible while more than 35% of eligible calls from mental health professionals never got a response.

“Calls were considered potentially dangerous, were ineligible because a mental health professional was already at the scene, or were unable to be triaged because FDNY EMS did not take the call or all necessary information could not be collected about the person in distress,” the comptroller’s office wrote in a news release at the time.

Who in their right mind thinks a program like this would work?
